David,

I was going through my office paperwork, sorting, shedding, and archiving, kind of a spring-cleaning in December, and I came upon a note to myself about your experiences performing in Seattle in the mid 1980’s.

Just wanted you to know that I am so happy that you have continued your art and that you are sharing yourself with others around the globe. I have very good memories of you while you performed in Seattle.

Let me know when you will be coming back. I would like to put that date on my calendar to make sure I do not miss you.

Brian Ramey, a very old, now retired, acquaintance from the Capitol Hill 15th Avenue E crowd during the mid 80s.

Hi David! I do not know if you would remember us, but you had come up to Tehachapi for the Mountain Festival about 17 years ago. You wandered into the booth we were renting out to promote our herbal tea, curious about who we were and what we were doing in such a small mountain town. We were also recent graduates of Tom Brown's Wilderness Survival School, so there was a lot we had to talk about. You had recently recorded "Oh Boy" and gave us a cassette tape of it. We played it for out toddler constantly and he always loved it. Unfortunately, we had to throw it out recently. The tape was just worn down. We always wondered how you were doing and found your site. Just wanted to let you know that we are very happy with your success and accomplishments. We knew 17 years ago you were someone special; we are not surprised of how far you have come. Our best!

Were you a trail leader with Mike Cohen at Trailside in the 1960s? I believe I saw you on JLTV, and you really looked familiar. I was at Trailside in Vermont, and on a Western trip. Helen Salwen and lynn Rolnick were there too. We are all childhood friends, and we remember you! We'd like to hear how you are doing. Thanks again.

Hi David,

A friend told me about you, so I looked up your web page. Do you ever come to either Sacramento or Reno?

Let me know, we'd love to see you live.

I've enjoyed the web site, especially "Women's Prision Gig" ~ funny stuff!

I'm looking for Shofar calls on CD that we can play during the Holy Days; do you have something like that? Or know where I can get my hands on it?

I loved your version of the old Carter song, "Gold Watch and Chain" and the video on Youtube. The upbeat versions just don't cut it - moody and atmospheric suits the sad words and the longing. But you know what they say about bluegrass - listen to the music and be happy, listen to the words and be sad. Thanks for making great music, David Zasloff!

David, I'm over here teaching English and playing a little in Tokyo. I did a YouTube search under “jazz, comedy” and saw your work there, your shakuhachi playing is very impressive. My initial reaction was depression, however, as I my stand-up comedy record is one Wright Brothers flight (got up about 50 feet in the air to scattered applause) and two Apollo 13s (blew gaskets in outer space and plunged quickly back to Earth). And you’re so multi-faceted and physically liberated. I do play frisbee, but tend not to shake my body in front of large groups. Plus you have a certain Richard Gere je ne sais pas, without being irritating about it. Anyway, I do list myself under “jazz” and “comedy” in YouTube, “japanjazzman” :
www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=japanjazzman
and have, with my Japanese wife, assembled a series of vignettes featuring my tenor and flute playing - and recounting our various life experiences, such as after 15 years here, three weeks ago I somehow lost my VISA and my JOB and then Jasmine discovered she’s PREGNANT but is this your problem?? No, of course not. All I ask at this point is that you visit our site and look at, say, “Jazzman Leaves Jasmine” or “At The Canal Club,” and enjoy. We also might need to stay at your place in Burbank for a few months this year, at least until the baby is delivered. It looks like a lovely little place on Google Maps, tree-lined street and everything, and of course you can forget about washing the dishes or any mold growth in the shower, I’ll handle all that. I’ll even buy your books. This is about solidarity among Jewish horn players. Red Rodney. Dave Liebman. Woody Allen. Stan Getz, who very few people realize had a face lift in 1946. I could go on...

Paul Aguayo

February 16, 2007

As a 64 year old aficionado of jazz & an amatuer flautist on bansuri, concert & shakuhachi flute I wonder how the heck I've not hear of you prior to yesterday when a fellow shakuhachi player asked me to 'get a load of this guy!" & led me to your site. You've got a new fan. Wish my mother was alive to see your Shofar (being a Lithiuanin Jew) program. Thank you for the many hours you have had to practice. your dedication.

I really enjoyed your music during the Sunday morning session at the Spiritual Awareness Cente. I've been playing Boy Oh Boy over and over!

Jay Wilis

November 20, 2006

Saw David at the Center for Spiritual Awareness in Edmonton during the Sunday service, and was completely overwhelmed by the song he performed on the autoharp. I thought the heavens were opening up!

I purchased the DVD and was somewhat disappointed by the sound quality, although, as a musician, I can understand the constraints David may have been working with at the time. Too bad they didn't record off the board because there was this ubiquitous "coughing lady" - that is, some very "esophageally" challenged woman who positioned herself right next to the camera.

To be fair it did capture the charm of his performance. It did not do anything close to justice when it comes to David's virtuosity on the flute and autoharp.

'Nuff said.

I am sincerely yours,

A decided fan,

Jay Willis

I found you. I saw your 1993 performance in Ventura CA… I bought “ Born To Be Happy” at the show and it continues to be played on a regular basis. I’ve been to some great live performances like UB40, US-3, Jimmy Buffet, ZZ-Top, and George Jones. Your 1993 show with a couple hundred people listening and dancing sticks in my mind the most. I’ll be calling to order your other CD. Thanks for the great music.
